Newsletter 5 Summer 2017

Newsletter 5,  Summer 2017

Feast – Saturday 10th June

This year our theme for the parade will be “Let’s Go Fly a Kite!”. As usual, we will be inviting the children who are going up to school in September to walk in the parade. We will be making costumes with the children and just ask that parents provide a black t-shirt and leggings or trousers. There will be a letter following with full details.

Feast is also an important fundraising day for the Playgroup, so if you have some time to help the Committee in the run up to feast or on the day, we would be very grateful. There will be a Making Evening at the Playhouse on Monday 5th June at 7pm which all parents are invited to where we prepare the decorations and games for the stall. We also need volunteers to help run the stall on the day: there will be a sign up sheet going up shortly if you can spare 45 minutes during the day to help out. We also have to provide a marshal to help the Community Association manage the parade – if you would like to do this, please speak to Fran, Fiona or Jacqui.

Parents’ Week – 27th – 30th June

This term we will be opening Playgroup up for some sessions during this week, inviting our families to come and see how the children learn at Playgroup. There will be the opportunity to join us at Forest School, a stay and play Messy play session and a literacy and numeracy session too. We hope that this will give you an insight into how our Learning Through Play ethos works in practice and give you some ideas for supporting your children’s learning at home. Look out for full details coming soon.

School Transition

The dates and times of activities have been sent out and are also up on the Notice Board outside Playgroup. We will be sending out a letter shortly about arrangements for taking children from Playgroup to activities  shortly.

30 Hours Funded Childcare

The government will be offering 30 hours free childcare (Early Years) to qualifying families from September 2017. To find out if you qualify (and to register if you do), please go to If you are interested in booking your child in for 30 hours and have not yet let us know, please speak to Jacqui or email as soon as possible.

Easter Shape Fundraising Challenge

A big thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s challenge. The children seem to have had a lot of fun (and used a lot of imagination) in finding their shapes. So far we have raised £171 (and still counting) which is fantastic!

Please have a look at the 2016 – 17 Diary on our website. We are aiming to add photos of what goes on in sessions each week, so please take a look at

Mobile Phones – A quick reminder that the use of mobile phones, camers or personal electronic devices of any sort is not allowed anywhere on the premises (including the front garden). This is for the safety and privacy of the children.

Wet weather/ water play –  The children have access to the garden and water play in all weather. We do have a limited supply of spare clothes at Playgroup, but we run out very quickly on wet days, so it really helps us if each child has their own change of clothes. Please label all your child’s belongings as this really helps staff.

Sunny Weather –   Please apply sun cream to your child before they come to Playgroup and if you would like us to top this up during the day, please send in sun cream in a clearly named tube or bottle and speak to your child’s key person. We do have spare sun hats, but recommend that you send your child with a sun hat and a long-sleeved top to cover up in very sunny weather. Please don’t send sunglasses in as for safety reasons children cannot wear them during sessions.

Forest School

We are taking all of the Rising 5s each week so please make sure that your child comes to Playgroup with wellies or boots and waterproofs on those days – they will get muddy. We regret that we cannot take children if they are not suitably dressed.

French Lessons  9am on Thursday mornings. It is an informal half hour of songs, games and fun activities aimed at introducing the language and developing listening and concentration skills in the year before children start school. Places are limited and there is a small fee (£5/ half-term) which helps us to buy language resources for Playgroup. If you are interested for this year or next, please speak to Jacqui.

Uniform Our blue Playgroup t-shirts and sweatshirts are available to purchase (£6 per t-shirt, £9 per sweatshirt) They come in the following generous sizes 1 – 2 (t-shirt only), 3-4 and 5-6. We usually have some in stock, please speak to Jacqui if you are interested.

Parent Rota –We welcome parents and carers to come in and help at one of their children’s sessions. We really appreciate the help and it is a nice way to understand your child’s experience at Playgroup and get to know their Key Person. Please look out for our Parent rota on the notice board if you would like to join us for a session. Parents can also join us at their child’s Forest School session, please speak to Jacqui or Fiona if you are interested.

Extra Sessions – We are happy to take one-off bookings for sessions where we have spaces. We charge for extra sessions at the same rates as our normal sessions and ask for payment in full on the day of the session. Please see Jacqui for details.

  • We regret that we cannot dispose of nappies on site. Please make sure that you collect nappies from the bin by the front door.
