Learning through Play

“We aim to provide a safe and happy environment in which children can learn through play.”

Our curriculum

There are seven areas which we use when we are observing, assessing and planning for our children this ensures children make all round development.

The seven areas are split into two categories the prime areas and the specific areas

The prime areas are

  • Communication and language

  • Physical development

  • Personal, social and emotional development.

Children will mostly develop the three prime areas first. These are  the building blocks for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in the four specific areas:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the world

  • Expressive arts and design.

Here at WCP, when a child joins us, we focus on the prime areas, broadening to include the specific areas as and when individual children are ready.

Our ethos at Waterbeach Community playgroup is learning through play. We believe that children learn best through play and exploration. We follow the EYFS statutory framework full details are available at:

The overarching principles of EYFS are:

Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.

Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.

Children learn and develop in enabling environments in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnerships between practitioners and parents/carers

Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates the framework covers the education and care of all the children in early years provision including children with special educational needs and disability
