May 2018 – Newsletter

Newsletter May  2018

We are very excited to announce that our theme for Feast this year is the Loch Ness Monster. Thank you very much for all your imaginative suggestions for “Something beginning with L”. The staff team have some great ideas for dressing the children in the parade and we will let you know the details in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we will be reading stories about Nessie with the children and looking to include their ideas and art-work on the day.

As always, our Committee will be hosting a fundraising stall on the green to raise funds for resources, and are appealing to all of our families for your support.  If you can spare some time on the day, please sign up to help on the stall. There is a rota at the Playhouse with 45 minute slots, if you don’t come in to the Playhouse, but would like to help on the day – please email us at to let us know when you would be available. If you aren’t able to help on the day, you could donate a small gift for the hamper raffle – (we are looking for alcohol, toiletries and children’s items). The Committee are also hosting a making evening on Monday 4th June at the Playhouse from 7pm where they will be making signs to decorate the stall and Nessie themed games. Parents are very welcome to come along and help: it is usually a fun, sociable evening with refreshments (and parents get to play with the paints!)

Welcome to our new staff

We are delighted to welcome two new members of staff to our team.

Abi Clark-Downey joined us at the beginning of this term as Playgroup Assistant and has settled in remarkably quickly and has already become a valued member of the team. She has previously worked as a child minder and started her Early Years qualifications before having her family.

Sally Smith has just joined us this week as an Early Years Practitioner, she is qualified to Level 3 and will be taking on the new Dragonfly Key Group. Sally joins us from the Fields Children’s Centre in Cambridge where she worked as one-to-one support before leaving to have her youngest child.

Please join us in welcoming Abi and Sally to the team and wishing them both every success.

Family Bunting – We are still collecting photos for our Family Bunting. Please have a look over the book corner as it is looking really nice. Each child is decorating their own flag to display their family photos. If you haven’t had a chance to send in a photo yet, please don’t worry as we can add more flags as we go along. If you don’t have any group photos, individual ones are fine (and pets are welcome too.)

30 Hours Funded Childcare

30 hours free childcare is now available to qualifying families. To find out if you qualify for Autumn 2019

(and to register if you do), please go to  If you are interested in booking your child in for 30 hours or would like to use some of your entitlement with us please speak to Jacqui or email

Lunches  healthy eating is a vital part of supporting your child’s overall well being and making sure that they are best placed to make the most of their learning opportunities. Please make sure that you send a healthy, balanced lunch in. Please do not include any sweets or chocolate bars and try to include at least one portion of fruit or vegetables. We provide a choice of milk or water at lunchtime, so please don’t include any squash or other sugary drinks (fruit shoots etc). If you are looking for healthy ideas for lunches the Childrens’ Food Trust website has some helpful advice.

Mobile Phones – A quick reminder that the use of mobile phones, cameras or personal electronic devices of any sort is not allowed anywhere on the premises (including the front garden). This is for the safety and privacy of the children.

Toilets – If parents or carers would like to assist their child to use the toilet in the morning, please use the adult toilet in the reception area as other children may be using the children’s toilets. In order to safeguard all of our children and respect their privacy the only adults allowed in the children’s toilets are staff.

Sunscreen, sun hats and shoes –  The children have access to the garden and water play in all weather. At this time of the year, please remember to apply sunscreen to your child before they come to Playgroup. If you would like us to reapply during the day, please leave a tube in your child’s bag and let their Key person know. If you forget to send a sun hat, please do not worry as we have plenty of spares and staff would not allow children outside without one. Please keep sending your child with spare clothes as water play is always available and please check to see if the clothes in your child’s bag still fit them. Please don’t send your child in crocs, flip flops r other loose fitting shoes as they are not suitable for climbing on the Play structure.   Please label all your child’s belongings as this really helps staff.

Uniform – Our blue Playgroup t-shirts and sweatshirts are available to purchase (£6 per t-shirt, £10 per sweatshirt) They come in the following generous sizes 1 – 2 (t-shirt only), 3-4 and 5-6. We usually have some in stock, please speak to Jacqui if you are interested.

Parent Rota –We welcome parents and carers to come in and help at one of their children’s sessions. We really appreciate the help and it is a nice way to understand your child’s experience at Playgroup and get to know their Key Person. Please look out for our Parent rota on the notice board if you would like to join us for a session. Parents can also join us at their child’s Forest School session, please speak to Jacqui or Fiona if you are interested.

Extra Sessions – We are happy to take one-off bookings for sessions where we have spaces. We charge for extra sessions at the same rates as our normal sessions and ask for payment in full when booking. Sessions must be booked with Jacqui so that she can check that space is available and payment must be made in advance. Please see Jacqui for full details.

  • We regret that we cannot dispose of nappies on site. Please make sure that you collect nappies from the bin by the front door.
  • If your child is ill and cannot come to Playgroup, please call and let us know. If they have experienced vomiting and/or diarrhoea, they are not allowed to return to Playgroup for 48 hours after the last incident.
  • Please label all your children’s belongings. Staff spend a lot of time trying to find children’s coats, gloves, jumpers etc. and we do occasionally have items of clothing getting lost or going home with the wrong family.
