1. Job Title:              Early Years Practitioner (Key Person)

Based:   Waterbeach

Reporting to:     Playgroup Deputy Manager

We are a friendly, busy Playgroup based in the heart of a small community. We aim to meet our children’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs through play and learning opportunities in line with our ethos: “learning through play”.

Main Duties:

To act as key person to a group of children:

  • To be the primary point of contact for those children and their families.
  • To liaise with parents and carers with regard to their children’s needs and progress, providing regular updates on how Key Children are getting on.
  • To be aware of and inform other staff of any special or individual needs specific to Key Children.
  • To carry out observations in line with the Early Years Statutory Framework and plan for next steps to support those children in making appropriate progress emotionally, physically and intellectually. To share Key Children’s progress with manager regularly.
  • To attend monthly staff meetings and to contribute to setting planning as required
  • To ensure that children’s records are accurate, informative and up to date at all times.

To provide stimulating and age-appropriate play and learning opportunities for children to ensure that their individual development needs are met, as directed by the Playgroup Deputy Manager and Manager.

To supervise children where appropriate and to protect them from dangerous or harmful situations.  We are a free-flow setting and children have access to our outdoor areas in all weather.

To provide a consistently high level of care that will enhance the childrens’ general health and well-being. Ensuring that toys and equipment are clean and safe to use. This includes assisting with the risk-assessment of the setting and individual activities.

To assist in the preparation and provision of the children’s snack ensuring that it is an interesting and challenging experience.

To undertake routine cleaning of the setting and equipment as directed.


  • The successful applicant will have experience working with young children and is likely to have an Early Years qualification. However, we would consider a strong unqualified candidate with a willingness to work towards qualifying at level 2 and/ or level 3.
  • Experience of working in an Early Years Setting as a Key Person would be an advantage, but again for a strong candidate we would consider other relevant experience.
  • A good understanding of child development and childrens’ needs
  • A good, working understanding of the Early Years and Foundation Stage Statutory Framework or willingness to acquire that understanding
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Enthusiasm and the confidence to engage with children, parents and carers and colleagues
  • A friendly, flexible, hard-working approach

Terms and Conditions

Salary: Competitive rates in line with local pay scales, depending on experience

Hours:   18 hours per week, term time only.


2. Job Title: SEN Support Practitioner

Based:   Waterbeach Community Playgroup, Waterbeach

We are a friendly, busy preschool based in the heart of a small community. We aim to provide a safe, happy environment in which children can learn through play and to ensure that the transition to school is as easy as possible for both the child and their parents.

Waterbeach Community Playgroup is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This position is a regulated activity and an enhanced DBS check will be required. We are an equal opportunities employer.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, caring and perceptive practitioner to join our team and provide one-to-one support and care for two children in the setting with additional needs.

Reporting to the setting SENCo the practitioner will be responsible for implementing and reviewing Individual Care Plans (ICPs), completing EYFS documentation and providing personal care as required.

The successful candidate is likely to be qualified to Level 3 in Early Years and have experience working with SEN children. However, we would consider a strong Level 2 candidate with sound relevant skills and experience.

Good written and verbal communication skills, sensitivity to the needs of children with additional needs and good organisational skills are essential

Hours:  circa 15 hours per week, term time only.
