Week beginning 6th November 2023

Another fun packed week at Community playgroup! This week we were thinking about bonfire night and fireworks. We have spent the week making lots of amazing sparkly artwork, exploring some fascinating STEM activities, developing our fine motor skills and having fun mark making. We also created some chocolate dipped sparklers to enjoy at home. The children have all been chatting about fireworks that they have seen either from the comfort of home or at organised firework displays, it’s lovely to listen to our children’s experiences and watch as they confidently share what they saw and heard.

Week beginning 13/11/23 - Celebrating World Nursery Rhyme Week

This week at playgroup we joined in the Nursery Rhyme week celebrations by exploring our favourite rhymes….. Learning nursery rhymes at a young age really helps a child’s language and communication skills, it also helps to build their confidence as they learn about rhyming and sounds which in turn helps to prepare them for reading and writing when they get older. Our children steadily build their repertoire of rhymes and songs during story and song time at the end of the morning and afternoon sessions and also during small group sessions where we focus on speech and language.

Here are a few photos of some of the things we got up to this week.

Week beginning 20th November All things cold and icy

As we move into the colder weather we began exploring all things cold and icy this week, creating lovely art work, thinking about freezing and melting, and exploring all different kinds of messy and sensory play themed around ice and snow.
At Community playgroup we encourage and support our children to try and use descriptive language when talking about things they see, hear and experience. They often make comments about things they have noticed and recently we have heard the children talking about who’s biggest whose smallest and also lots of other mathematically descriptive language So this week we  decided to incorporate this into our planning with an activity where we measured our feet to see if we had feet bigger or smaller than Father Christmas. We had lots of fun painting our feet and making footprints, we also discovered we’ve got lots of children who have incredibly  ticklish feet!!!

Week beginning 27/11/23 - More Winter fun

This week at playgroup we have been continuing to explore the winter theme, we have been doing lots of activities to support our fine motor skills and also enjoying some of our favourite activities like the role play shop.
On Tuesday we all had a go at cutting up vegetables to make a warming vegetable soup, knife skills are quite tricky to master and after we had talked about how to be safe with knives we all had a go at chopping up the different vegetables.
Many of the children have been excitedly talking about decorating their homes for the holidays so we started to incorporate some Christmas themed activities, the children loved decorating the trees with shiny colourful baubles and as with everything we do there was lots of learning going on too, from colour recognition to grouping and sorting and of course using our fine motor skills to carefully place the decorations.
What another busy week we had together
