Week beginning 2nd March 2026

All things Spring

As the daffodils, snowdrops and buds on the trees begin to appear and everything begins to wake from its wintery slumber we’ve started thinking about what we can see, hear and smell as we walk to the playhouse and spend time in the garden. So this week we have spent time exploring minibeasts, plants, flowers and creating some amazing spring artwork. We also joined in world book day celebrations looking at the following much loved stories Goldilocks and the three bears Supertato Superworm Elmer The Tiger who came to tea. The children and staff came to playgroup dressed as their favourite characters ranging from ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ to a Doctor from ‘The Hospital Dog’ story. It was lovely to share the children’s favourite stories as they all brought their favourite books with them. Come back next week and see what we get up to as we explore science week with lots of STEM activities on offer

Science Week

Week beginning 9th March 2026

This week at playgroup we explored lots of amazing activities themed around British science week. We looked at how rainbows are formed. We made some of our own lovely travelling rainbows, watching the colours seep through the paper towel due to capillary action. We looked at different materials and sorted them, and then explored forces with magnetic wands to see which materials attracted and which didn’t. We looked at chemical reactions with a fizzing Elmer the elephant and the effects of force and pressure with Oobleck. We engaged in lots of different experiments using ice and also the magic milk experiment to understand cause and effect as the washing up liquid breaks down the fat in the milk causing a reaction making the food colouring swirl. A firm favourite though was the rain cloud jars where the children used pipettes to drop coloured water into shaving foam sprayed on top of water. When the shaving foam became saturated with coloured water it permeated through and looked just like raindrops. This was a great way to demonstrate how rain is formed. We also explored growth as we began planting some runner beans in decorated window greenhouses. These help the children to see how the beans grow, from emerging roots, to shoots and finally the little runner bean seedling ready to pot on. Why not come back next week and see if our beans have started to grow and also see what we are getting up to as we start exploring Easter
